Alsik receives certification for its sustainable initiatives

Alsik Hotel & Spa in Sønderborg has been awarded tourism’s recognised eco-label: the Green Key certificate. Green Key is an international eco-labelling initiative that recognises companies’ efforts to minimise their impact on the planet and promote responsible tourism.

To be certified, companies must fulfil a large number of specific environmental requirements and commit to a comprehensive approval procedure and ongoing controls. In connection with the certification of Alsik Hotel & Spa, the jury stated, among other things:

“The jury has particularly noted how from the start there has been a focus on future-proofing the building with serious investments in, among other things, control and monitoring of energy consumption and the resulting targeted work to reduce the hotel’s CO2 emissions.”

Since the design phase, Alsik has been planned as a visionary green building with very ambitious sustainability goals. For example, the hotel has 380 m2 of solar panels on the roof and a heat supply based on district heating. Both contribute to lowering the carbon footprint. In addition, technical solutions and systems have been established to ensure that surplus heat from the cooling systems can be stored and utilised as needed. This makes it possible to use the surplus heat to heat water in the hotel rooms and spa, among other things. Another important element that saves CO2 is that all lighting in the hotel is based almost 100% on energy-saving LED lighting.

Combating food waste is also an important focus area, and a lot of effort is made to do business with primarily local food suppliers. The latter supports local sustainable development and reduces CO2 emissions from production, storage and transport.

“We are very proud to have achieved Green Key certification. It reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Sustainability and green solutions have been an important part of Alsik since the early idea phase,” says Jesper Bach Larsen, CEO of Alsik Hotel & Spa.

The certification from Green Key is a nice pat on the back, but the work doesn’t stop here. The work to make the hotel more sustainable continues, and we are constantly aiming for new improvements,” emphasises Jesper Bach Larsen.

Through the many initiatives that have now led to Alsik being certified, the hotel is contributing to the goal of making Sønderborg 100% CO2-neutral by 2029 – an ambitious goal that the municipality, business community and residents have joined forces on via ProjectZero. This is an endeavour that is continuously being expanded, and with Green Key certification, Alsik Hotel & Spa also commits to continuing its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint on an ongoing basis.
