Behind the scenes at Alsik
Covering 24,800 square metres and standing 70 metres tall with 19 floors, Alsik is the biggest hotel in the Danish-German borderlands and one of the biggest hotels in Denmark.
The hotel is beautifully situated along Sønderborg’s lovely old waterfront where modern architecture, innovative construction and impressive works of art interact with its historical presence, the pace of the city and the unique landscapes along Flensburg Fjord.
Alsik is part of Frank Gehry’s master plan
The master plan for the development of the Sønderborg waterfront was developed by prize-winning Canadian architect Frank Gehry. Alsik, which opened in early summer 2019, is part of Gehry’s master plan that also includes commercial and residential development, recreational green areas, a multicultural centre, dynamic urban spaces and much more besides.
Environment and Certification
Alsik was designed by the renowned Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen Architects. When the hotel was built, a range of energy-efficient and technical solutions were integrated into the building. These include solar panels and district heating, while frequency converters from Danfoss regulate the operation of ventilation, cooling and pumping systems according to demand.
Our efforts continue in our daily operations, where we focus on energy and resource consumption, waste sorting and procurement. Alsik is Green Key certified, and the certification sets specific requirements for our work and documentation.
The Nordic Style
Alsik’s interiors magnificently exemplify Nordic design, atmosphere and comfort (hygge). The authentic materials draw Nordic wildlife and light into the beautiful hotel, which is naturally furnished with elegant furniture and interiors epitomising the best of the Scandinavian design tradition.
A distinctive Danish and Nordic element is also incorporated into Alsik’s logo, inspired by the lovely alsike clover. Although the clover seems diminutive, its delicate roots and tiny corollas once laid the groundwork for a transformational upheaval.
